Backup Process
Understanding the backup process helps ensure your data is properly protected. Here's how Backups handles your GIS data:
Creating a Backup
- Select the GIS data sources you want to back up
- Choose between full or incremental backup
- Set destination location (local, network, or cloud)
- Apply any filters or exclusions
- Initiate the backup process
- Review the backup report upon completion
Automated Backups
To set up automated backups:
- Navigate to the Schedule tab in the main interface
- Click "Create New Schedule"
- Select data sources to include
- Define frequency (daily, weekly, etc.)
- Set time and day preferences
- Configure retention settings
- Save the schedule
Restoration Process
In the event of data loss, Backups provides a straightforward restoration process:
- Open the Backups application and navigate to the Restore tab
- Browse available backups by date or search for specific content
- Select the backup version you wish to restore
- Choose between full restoration or selective file recovery
- Specify the destination location
- Select conflict resolution method (overwrite, rename, skip)
- Initiate the restoration process
- Verify restored data integrity
Pro Tip
Use the "Test Restore" feature to verify backup integrity without overwriting existing data. This creates a separate copy of the restored data for validation purposes.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with Backups, here are solutions to common problems:
Backup Failures
- Insufficient disk space: Free up space on the destination drive or select an alternative location
- Network connection issues: Verify network connectivity and permissions for network destinations
- File access errors: Ensure files aren't locked by other applications during backup
- Timeout errors: Increase the timeout threshold in advanced settings for large datasets
Restoration Issues
- Corrupt backup files: Try an earlier backup version or use the repair utility
- Incomplete restoration: Check logs for specific file errors and retry with selective restoration
- Permission errors: Ensure you have write access to the destination location
Application Issues
- Application won't start: Check for conflicting software or reinstall the application
- High resource usage: Adjust performance settings or schedule backups during off-hours
- License validation errors: Verify internet connectivity or contact support for manual activation
Frequently Asked Questions
How secure are my backups?
Backups uses AES-256 encryption for all data, both in transit and at rest. Your encryption keys are never stored on our servers, ensuring only authorized users can access the data.
Can I back up data while it's in use?
Yes, Backups uses Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) on Windows and similar technologies on other platforms to create consistent backups of files that are in use.
How much storage space do I need?
Storage requirements depend on your data size and retention policies. As a general rule, plan for 1.5x your data size for full backups, plus additional space for incremental versions.
Can I restore to a different server or location?
Yes, Backups supports cross-platform and location-independent restoration. You can restore data to any compatible system regardless of where the backup was created.
How do I upgrade to a newer version?
The application includes an auto-update feature that notifies you when updates are available. You can also download the latest version from your account portal and install it over your existing installation.
